StatusDude vs Uptime Kuma — When Self-Hosting Your Monitor Is the Problem
Uptime Kuma is a fantastic open-source project. Beautiful UI, 90+ notification integrations, dead simple to deploy. If you're self-hosting everything and want a monitoring dashboard that lives next to your stack, it's a solid choice.
But there's a fundamental problem with self-hosted monitoring that no amount of good engineering can fix: when your server goes down, your monitoring goes down with it.
The "Who Monitors the Monitor?" Problem
Here's the scenario. You're running Uptime Kuma on the same server as your app (or in the same data center, or on the same cloud provider). Your server crashes at 2 AM. What happens?
Nothing. Literally nothing. No alert. No notification. No SMS waking you up. Uptime Kuma is as dead as the thing it was supposed to monitor. You find out when your first user emails you in the morning.
"But I run Uptime Kuma on a separate server!" Sure, but how Uptime Kuma is going to monitor your internal services and docker container on your first server? Are you going to setup VPN manually? Add yet another complication? Just to get the status of your services?
This isn't a knock on Uptime Kuma specifically (despite it having hard limit of 20 seconds checks). It's a fundamental constraint of self-hosted monitoring. You're asking the same infrastructure that fails to be the one that detects the failure. It's like asking the unconscious security guard to call for help.
External Monitoring Isn't Optional
For monitoring to be reliable, it needs to come from outside your infrastructure. A completely separate system, on separate servers, in separate data centers, with separate failure domains.
When your server goes down:
- Self-hosted monitor (same server): Dead. No alert.
- Self-hosted monitor (different server, same provider): Maybe. Provider-wide outage? Also dead.
- External SaaS monitor: Detects it immediately. Alerts you from infrastructure that has nothing to do with yours.
This isn't about SaaS vs self-hosted as a philosophical debate. It's physics. Two things that share a failure domain will fail together.
Uptime Kuma checks your services from wherever you host it. One location. One network path. One perspective.

"But Uptime Kuma Is My Agent"
Some people use Uptime Kuma as an internal monitoring agent — deploy it in your network to check internal services. Fair. It works for that.
But it's a one-way street. Uptime Kuma gives you internal visibility OR external visibility, never both in a coordinated way. You can't have it check your internal services AND verify from multiple external regions that your public-facing stuff is reachable.
